RE : Code Veronica Comic Complete (4 Volume)

Based on the hot-selling video game and hit movie, the fourth and final installment of the RESIDENT EVIL: CODE VERONICA saga finds Chris Redfield finally tracking down his sister Claire and her compatriot Steve in Antarctica. But in order to rescue his sibling from the Umbrella base, Chris will not only need to fight through the evil corporation's mutated monsters and genetically altered creatures but also thwart the sinister plot of an insane Alexia Ashford. Adapted from the original Hong Kong version, this book ties up all of the loose ends in this pulse-pounding adventure.

Being a fan of comic book art, video games, and zombies, I figured this graphic novel would be a unique treat... but I have mixed feelings. The art in this book is very nice and interesting, especially in the action sequences. It remains faithful to the game, in that the characters randomly find weapons, ammunition, puzzle keys, and herbs... although this adds to the choppy storytelling. Overall, the story is bland and uninteresting, much of it being told through Claire's non-stop self exposition. If you're a huge fan of the game and comic book art, you will probably enjoy this graphic novel. But, if you are looking to be engaged in a great zombie story you should look elsewhere.

The DC Comics Encyclopedia

This copiously illustrated encyclopedia chronicles more than 1,000 DC Comics characters from the 1930s to the present. Arranged alphabetically, each entry gives the first appearance, status (hero, villain, etc.), real name, occupation, height, weight, and eye and hair color of the superheroes or supervillains. Special abilities and superpowers are also listed along with ample cross-references to other comic characters or superleague affiliations, such as the L.E.G.I.O.N. cosmic peacekeeping force.

The biographical entries make fascinating reading in alternative history. For example, the Crimson Avenger served in a league called the Seven Soldiers of Victory during World War II. Afterward, he was sent backward in time. He came forward in time and discovered that he was struck with a terminal disease. After his death, an unknown woman purchased two guns that had belonged to him. These guns transformed her into Crimson Avenger II, who became an agent of vengeance and execution. Of course, famous characters such as Wonder Woman or Batman are included. But lesser-known characters, such as Superman's college flame, Lori Lemaris (a mermaid), are also listed.

The colorful design makes this book a pleasure to browse. Special two-page features, such as "Amazing Weapons" and "Romantic Moments," are interspersed with the biographies. Recommended for public libraries with active comic readership. Jack O'Gorman

Superman Comics Collection

This book is NOT a comprehensive collection of Superman comics through the ages. The introduction is by well known DC editor, E. Nelson Bridwell but unlike "Superman from the 30's to the 70's", only selected classic stories from the 50's to the 70's are included. Nevertheless, ALL stories are in full color:

Action #500: an updated "Origin of Superman". Story by Bridwell. Art by Curt Swan and Murphy Anderson. and layouts by Carmine Infantino.

Adventure #271: "How Luthor met Superboy!" (and became bald).

Action #252: "The Supergirl from Krypton" Supe's cousin's first "real" appearance.

Superman #141: "Superman's Return to Krypton" written by Jerry Siegel and in three parts:
I. "Superman Meets Jor-El and Lara again!"
II. "Superman's Kryptonian Romance!"
III. " The Surprise of Fate!"

Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane: "Three Nights in the Fortress of Solitude!". Lois' antics at Supe's bachelor pad.

Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #16: "The Boy of Steel". Jimmy becomes invulnerable after being irradiated at a nuclear bomb test Supe's flew him to (thanks, pal!).

Superman #167: "The Team of Luthor and Brainiac!"
Part I: "the Deadly Duo!"
II: "The Downfall of Superman!"
III: "The Hour of Kandor's Vengeance!"

Superman #296: "Who Took the Super out of Superman!" Part I of a good four part story about Supe/Kent's identity crisis.

Superman #297: II:"Clark Kent Forever--Superman Never!"

Superman #298: III:"Clark Kent, Get Out of My Life!"

Superman #299: IV:"The Double-or-Nothing Life of Superman!"

Overall, a good Superman collection but diehard fans will be yearning for more!

Asterix Comic Complete Archive

Asterix or The Adventures of Asterix is a series of French comic books written by Ren Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo (Uderzo also took over the job of writing the series after the death of Goscinny in 1977). The series first appeared in French in the magazine Pilote on 29 October 1959. As of 2009, 34 comic books in the series have been released.
The series follows the exploits of a village of ancient Gauls as they resist Roman occupation. They do so by means of a magic potion, brewed by their druid, which gives the recipient superhuman strength. The protagonist, the titular character, Asterix, along with his friend Obelix have various adventures. The "ix" suffix of both names echoes the name of Vercingetorix, a historical Gaul chieftain. In many cases, the stories have them travel to various countries around the world, though other books are set in and around their village. For much of the history of the series (Volumes 4 through 29), settings in Gaul and abroad alternated, with even-numbered volumes set abroad and odd-numbered volumes set in Gaul, mostly in the village.

The Asterix series is one of the most popular Franco-Belgian comics in the world, with the series being translated into over 100 languages, and it is popular in most European countries. Asterix is less well known in the United States and Japan.

The success of the series has led to the adaptation of several books into 11 films; eight animated, and three with live actors. There have also been a number of games based on the characters, and a theme park near Paris, Parc Asterix, is themed around the series. To date, 325 million copies of 34 Asterix books have been sold worldwide, making co-creators Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo France's bestselling authors abroad.

Demashita! Powerpuff Girls Z (Complete)

In order to stop an ecological disaster, Professor Utonium's son, Ken Kitazawa, uses Chemical Z, a new form of the Professor's original substance Chemical X, to destroy a giant glacier. However, the impact of Chemical Z causes several black and white lights to appear in the skies above Tokyo City. Three ordinary girls; Momoko, Miyako, and Kaoru, are engulfed in white lights and become Hyper Blossom, Rolling Bubbles and Powered Buttercup respectively. However, the numerous black lights cause others to turn to the side of evil, so the Powerpuff Girls Z must use their super powers to protect Tokyo City from villains such as Mojo Jojo, Fuzzy Lumpkins and Him.

Bible Black New Testament (Complete)

Bible Black: New Testament (新バイブルブラック, Shin Baiburuburakku, New Bible Black) (subtitled "The Spear Of Longinus"), is the third installment of the OVA series. Years have passed since Walpurgis Night, and the girls of the Witchcraft Club have all graduated and made their way in the world. Both Shiraki and Saeki become teachers at their school, while Takashiro becomes a nun. Imari has become a police woman, who serves as a psychic investigator in the Tokken division. Her team is looking into a series of horribly gruesome murder cases that all happened during sexual intercourse.

Strangely, witnesses see a ghostly figure at the crime scenes. Saeki restarts the Witchcraft Club with a new crop of girls, but it's unclear at first, if she is fighting Kitami or helping her. Meanwhile, Imari and her Tokken subordinate, Aki, are caught up in a bank robbery conducted by occult robbers. An impromptu ceremony performed at the scene causes Kitami to take over the possessed Imari. In the aftermath, Imari steals the Lance of Longinus from the bank vault that the robbers were after.

Imari/Kitami has found the virginal "Scarlet woman" in Aki. She indulges in the sexual ceremony with her using the Lance of Longinus. Meanwhile, the ghostly figure, identified as Jody Crowley, and Takashiro both interfere with the ceremony but with different intentions. The Lance becomes permanently lodged within Aki's vagina and she is now targeted by the various forces of black magic.

The final ceremony climaxes with the black magic forces of Imari/Kitami and Jody Crowley competing over the Scarlet woman. Attacks fly all around while Takashiro and Captain Yuge struggle to defeat both of them and end the dark ceremony. When Jody seems to emerge triumphant, the Lance of Longinus reappears out of Aki and reanimates the original grimoire, Bible Black. The devil emerges to take the souls of contract: Kitami Reika and Jody Crowley. A final effort by Takashiro manages to seal the grimoire while Jody's soul is taken and Kitami manages to possess Jody's body instead. The final scene seems peaceful with everybody content with the world, but in one of the final shots, we see that Aki's laptop screen saver happens to be several images of a menacing Kitami, hinting that there may be a third season.

Most of the characters from Bible Black return in New Testament, however, Minase doesn't appear and is only mentioned once. It is possible that under the influence of Kitami, Imari killed Minase even before the events of New Testament since Kitami did mention to Minase that she would kill him after possessing Imari's body. It is also possible that Takashiro had something to do with his disappearance, since during episode 3, Kitami/Imari blames Takashiro for taking "my Minase away from me." Each episode of New Testament has a title beginning with the letter "R".

Zoids Genesis (Complete)

Generations ago on planet Zi at the height of human development, Zoids were used in an epic battle that eventually led to the destruction of the world. So devastated was the world that the planet was barely habitable for humanity and nature. The catastrophe was named "Gods' Fury" and was considered a supernatural event by locals who believed the world was punished because of humanity's foolishness.

Using one of their most powerful and largest Zoids, the surviving people of this conflict rode on Gildragons for safety and shelter. While one group returned to the earth and founded IronRock City, another group built a floating city in the sky called Sora City. The people there rebuilt their society and eventually began researching ways to restore the planet. After many years of research, they planned to use their bio-mechanical technology to restore the world in order to re-inhabit the land their ancestors almost destroyed; as they lived in their city they succumbed to hubris and no longer desired to return.

The technology they researched on was implemented on the planet, which gave birth to what the surviving locals refer as generators. It has unique capabilities to maintain energy and growth for machinery and life in the surrounding area. Eventually, Sora City would encounter energy depletion and scouted planet Zi with their own agents. As other agents monitored the growth and progress of the humans that survived "Gods' Fury," others approached people to make deals. The council of Sora City picked a city called Digu and traded off advanced technology for Reggel (universal energy resource, like oil). Their arrangement not only involved treaties, but also sending a Sora Sky citizen to be adopted as part of the agreement. The King of Digu would accept Jiin as his son, and since then Digu researched and developed their own technologies to form their own army, Digald. Eventually Digald would mass produce their own Zoids with the aid of technology provided by Iron Rock.

The Bio Zoids were massed produced in rapid numbers and gradually started conquering neighboring villages, towns, and cities which had generators to help produce more energy for Digald's energy consumption. They used special stones that could detect a human's ability to pilot a Bio Zoid and drafted them into Digald forces, never to see their friends and family again. Though known and feared throughout the continent, people couldn't do much to defend themselves as their Zoids were no match against the Bio Zoids and they couldn't survive without having a generator. People either surrendered or were destroyed.

The story of Zoids Genesis actually begins here as Ra-Kan roams the world with Mii after his kingdom has fallen to Digald. Though his kingdom Kira had fallen, Kira's survivors rebuilt a new city called Zuuri in a new secret location far from Digald's influence. Young Ruuji Familon is working with his father to help recover Zoids from the bottom of the ocean in their village Miroodo. While Mii and Ra-Kan was within the local area, so was Major Zairin. Zairin would discover that Miroodo had a small generator for Digald forces to claim. His troops arrived early and attacked Miroodo. Ruuji could never activate a Zoid, but the situation was dire and he jumped into Mursasame Liger. This Zoid answered to Ruuji's call and activated to aid him against the Bio Raptors attacking his village.

Ra-Kan and Mii joined Ruuji in their fight against Digald. Eventually a battle between Zairin and Ruuji lead to the accidental damage to Miroodo's generator. With the generator damaged, this led to the fear of Miroodo's destruction. Ra-Kan agreed to aid Ruuji in finding a generator mechanic. This quest for finding a generator repairman would lead Ruuji to befriend Kotona, Garaga, Ron, then Seijuurou-san. Through their adventures, Ruuji was unable to find a person capable of repairing the generator. His journey made him realize even if the generator could be fixed, Digald's expansion will eventually rule everything including Miroodo. Ruuji suggested to Ra-Kan to fight against Digald and eventually Ra-Kan agreed that Digald's expansion couldn't continue. With the resources and forces of Zuuri, Ra-Kan began organizing an offense. They invited many resistance groups to their cause, but only a few had interest in joining them.

With the eventual successes of the Digald Suppression Army, their reputation garnered the attention of many and eventually their forces grew in numbers. Meanwhile, Jiin's power and influence grew. After the death of the King of Digu, Jiin declared himself Emperor and eventually a God to Digald. His new policies were not only more draconian, but it alienated many of the officers under Jiin. However, it's not a big issue to Jiin, since he's able to extract human souls into the bodies of Bio Zoid pilot droids. He tripled his army without the need for human pilots. Jiin eventually betrayed his own people and launched Bio Raptor Guis on an aerial assault against Sora City. With Sora City destroyed, there was no real power left to oppose him, except for the Suppression Army which he considered as a mere nuisance.

After discovering that Digald droid pilots were extracted human souls, many defected to the Digald Suppression Army. Ruuji felt their anti-Digald army title was no longer appropriate, and renamed themselves the Jiin Suppression Army. A large final battle was waged against Jiin in his Bio Tyranno. After a very difficult fight, Ruuji destroyed Jiin with Mugen Liger and ended the conflict to restore peace to the lands.

Tomie Manga Complete (2 Volumes)

These rather disturbing tales tell the story of a high-school girl named Tomie, who can be seen as a living embodiment of lust and all the negative emotions that go along with it, such as jealousy. Tomie is the ultimate self-destructive entity, yet ironically she survives anything. She is identified by a mole under her left eye.

She possesses an undisclosed power to make anyone fall in love with her. Through sleight of hand, or emotional manipulation, she drives these men into jealous rages that inevitably lead to brutal acts of violence. Men kill each other over her; and girls are sometimes driven to jealous rages as well. Tomie is inevitably killed time and again, only to regenerate. Tomie is cursed to go on forever in this way.

In the first story "Tomie", she returns to school after an announcement that she had died, much to the horror of her friends and teachers. It transpires that during a school trip, her fellow students and favorite teacher murder her and dismember her body.

Each story tells a different viewpoint of how she lived and died, with some recurring characters. The teacher (Takagi) who murders her in the first story returns several times, and though clearly insane, he still is under Tomie's thrall (even though he has noted that he understands why people fall for her). Yet at the same time he is hinted to have his own agenda, encouraging research into what makes Tomie tick. In a chapter where a copy of Tomie burned a kidney from a previous tomie in a hospital, Takagi appears from out of a pantry and expresses his disappointment with his experiment, so he burns down the entire building in an attempt to kill any other Tomies.

Her hair is a major factor in the stories. It kills as well as possesses, such as in the story of a young girl (Chie) who steals the hair of her father's ex-lover (Tomie) and puts it in a box. The hair grows despite it not being attached to anything. Chie's best friend borrows the hair and discovers that it can be attached to her body, which then takes the place of her regular hair. But there is a price to pay for everything in these stories. The stories are gruesome but draw the reader in with horrors that hide just around the corner.

Tomie also has the ability to use her cells to make a copy of herself using someone else's body. When a boy (Tadashi) killed her, Tomie's "father" (really Takagi trying to encourage an experiment) immediately allows the doctors to do a kidney transplant with another girl (Yukiko) who really needs it. Tomie's kidney starts to hurt Yukiko, so the doctors take it out. The kidney grows Tomie's head and small limbs, and tried to seduce one of the doctors with flattery, though he found it absolutely horrifying. Meanwhile, Yukiko appears to be not only completely cured, but she has grown taller and has darker, prettier hair. When she tries to hook up with one of her friends who she met at the hospital, he refuses because of her change in attitude and the fact that he would become a replacement Tadashi (who she had a crush on before Tomie came), so she becomes furious and begins to act more cruel. When the fire that Takagi caused spreads, the boy attempts to get Yukiko out. However, when he reaches her room, she has made a complete change into Tomie. She tells him "thank you, but my name is Tomie."

Later it was revealed there are several copies of Tomie roaming around the world, each with an individual mind. Sometimes the two Tomie copies would be jealous of each other and try to have each other killed. The kidney in the paragraph above had its head severed, and the head grew into a copy of Tomie. The new Tomie burned the kidney soon after her completion.

When her body scattered into pieces, each fragment of her body is capable of regenerating into a complete and independent body. When her body is burnt at high temperatures to ash, it will not regenerate. That's the only way to definitely kill Tomie. It is also shown that even if Tomie's body isn't injured, her body will attempt to sprout another Tomie through budding, a process usually begun if Tomie is emotionally stressed.

Although her body is mortal and weak against all assaults, her regenerative power makes her immortal. Sometimes it takes a lot of time to regenerate her body if it is greatly damaged.

Gyo Manga Complete (2 Volumes)

Tadachi and Kaori are vacationing in Okinawa when Tadachi sees something shoot by him while deep sea diving. The incident might have gone forgotten if it wasn’t for the oddity whipping through the grass that evening at equal speeds to the first mysterious occurrence… When the creature turns out to be a fish with strange, insect-like legs propelling it across land, no one is prepared for the larger and greater manifestations yet to come.

Uzumaki‘s terror came through telling a story of isolation, where the female protagonist and her unhinged boyfriend are pulled in more and more to the threat of the spiral as it drew in the immediate area away from the rest of the world, making it a threat that no one else could escape. By contrast, Gyo‘s approach is to look outwards, taking an isolated incident and having it expand across all of Okinawa before settling its gaze on the rest of Japan. By having the strange legged plague increase from a local to a national threat, Gyo is able to keep the threat not only important, but also more and more terrifying. Gyo still has a lot of smaller moments that work well within such a larger-scale story for Ito, mind you. Kaori’s neuroses about bad smells and her increasing terror is a story in its own right, and Ito is able to evoke real sympathy for a character that you’ve spent the first half of the collection growing more and more irritated towards. The only place the story ever seems to falter is when the explanation for the legged fish shows up; since it ultimately serves to set up a more terrifying second half, though, it’s only a momentary misstep in an otherwise enthralling book.

With a book as strange as Gyo you’ll need art that can carry off the ideas, but those who have seen Ito’s art in Uzumaki will know that’s not a problem. Ito is able to bring menace and suspense to Tadachi’s deep sea diving trip at the beginning of the novel is eerie enough, with its shadows and feeling of claustrophobia despite being in such an open expanse of water. Once the walking fish appear, though, things go from bad to worse. (Or, depending on how you look at it, good to even better.) By making the legs look like those of insects, Ito cleverly made the initial glimpse of the creature one of distaste, one that increases as more and more of the creatures appear. Perhaps a true testament to the power of Ito’s art is that when walking sharks and worse begin appearing, he keeps them from looking silly. Having our protagonists being stalked by a shark moving across the front porch should have been ludicrous, but just looking at it can’t help but send a shiver up your spine.

Gyo is another tremendous success for Ito. It’s no small wonder that anyone working on horror comics in Japan looks up to him; you really cannot get any more terrifying than the nightmares that Ito puts on paper. In the end, my only complaint is that I’m absolutely dying to see Volume 2. More, please.

Gundam Century Starcraft Total Conversion

Gundam Century is a total conversion for Starcraft which transforms graphics, sounds, stats, gameplay into an environment which suits the popular Japanese animation saga; Gundam. To extremely simplify the concept of Gundam, it's about two political factions which do intergalactic combat with giant robots known as mobile suits. The saga so far has been a long running 20 years. The game is a total conversion and very fun.

Most of the custom scenarios and campaigns use the existing editor shipped with the game, although many newer campaigns use custom hacks to cut a few corners and get around some restrictions. Some creators even go to the trouble to record their own sound effects and voices. There's a few notable exceptions, but most StarCraft custom mods don't really alter its polished, integrated structure: the careful balancing is too easily broken and its harder to produce nice artwork that fits in with Blizzard's excellent graphics. StarCraft predates the in-built mod switching that comes with more recent games; its very much a closed and sealed black box.

But no dedicated gaming community worth its salt is going to sit back and just let the publisher call the shots: there are custom mods that actually modify the program with third party utilities, adapting StarCraft's data files and changing graphics and sounds. Some of these hacks are little more than enhanced game AI's for more intense single player action, but others are more ambitious, changing graphics, sounds, unit stats and limitations and sometimes even the guts of the game engine.

Fairy Musketeer Akazukin (Complete)

Long, long ago, there existed a world of magic and science. But having both powers was making people conceited and lazy. So God split the world in to the world of science, Elde(or the Earth), and the world of magic, Phandavale. One day in Fandavale, a terrible witch named Cendrillon revives. Cendrillon plots to rule both worlds, and searches for the "key of Elde" and the "key of Phandavale" which holds tremendous power.

A young boy from Elde by the name of Sōta meets a mysterious girl from Phandavale, Akazukin (Red Riding Hood), and her talking wolf companion, Val. Sōta learns that he is the key of Elde. Now it is up to Akazukin, Val, and the other Musketeers, Shirayukihime (Snow White)and Ibara (Sleeping Beauty) to protect Sōta from Cendrillon and her Nightmarians who wish to obtain the power he mysteriously possesses.
